Latest Trend Hunter Report Explores Opportunities in the Metaverse & NFT Development

nikeland-robloxFebruary 9, 2022 | TrendHunter.com’s latest free report for Toy Association members examines opportunities in the metaverse and NFT (non-fungible tokens) development.

“As more brands dip their toes into the metaverse, these digital worlds are opening new doors of opportunity to connect with audiences,” said Anne McConnell, senior director of market research & data strategy at The Toy Association. “For any Toy Association member interested in learning more about the metaverse and how NTFs work, we encourage you to get inspired by how other businesses are creating exclusive content and marketing opportunities.”

Some of the key trends and examples highlighted in this report include:

  • NFT Marketing – At the beginning of COVID-19, brands quickly pivoted their marketing strategy to digital out of necessity. Now, many are embracing the virtual world in its entirety and taking advantage of the popularity of NFTs to connect with consumers. Through Mattel Creations, three one-of-a-kind Barbie x Balmain NFTs were sold at auction, blurring the lines between digital and traditional collecting, and marking Barbie’s entrance into the world of digital art.

  • Charitable NFTs – Brands are launching NFTs with profits being donated to charities. NFT-based fashion brand CryptoKickers and NBA veteran Wilson Chandler collaborated on an exclusive limited-edition collection of virtual sneakers with profits going to support the rainforest preservation nonprofit Cool Earth and the Benton Harbor Community Development Corporation.

  • Mainstream Metaverse — Mainstream brands are investing in metaverse technology to develop a range of shared social experiences online. Nike’s NIKELAND 3D on Roblox, a popular metaverse gaming platform, features a digital version of Nike's headquarters and arenas, where users can play a series of mini games such as tag, the floor is lava, and dodgeball. Likewise, Forever 21 teamed up with Roblox for a digital experience called Forever 21 Shop City, giving players the chance to build, own, and manage their own in-game stores.
