President Biden Signs Continuing Resolution to Temporarily Avoid Government Shutdown

stock image of capitol hillSeptember 27, 2024 | On September 26, President Biden signed into law a continuing resolution (CR) that will extend funding for the federal government until December 20. With sweeping bipartisan support, the House (341-82) and Senate (78-18) quickly voted the day before to approve the temporary funding measure, which prevents a government shutdown that would have occurred at the start of the 2025 fiscal year on October 1.

The CR maintains funding for most programs at current levels, with exceptions allowing flexibility and additional appropriations for specific needs. Notably, the bill allocates extra funding for the Secret Service to support protective operations during the 2024 presidential campaign and related events.

Although the CR extends funding for three more months, Congress is gearing up for another budget showdown before year’s end after election day on November 5. Both chambers are now adjourned for six weeks.
