Federal Standards
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the U.S. government agency charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of consumer products under its jurisdiction. Visit CPSC.gov or SaferProducts.gov for more information.

ASTM Standards
ASTM International is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of voluntary toy safety standards developed through a rigorous consensus process. Today, over 12,000 ASTM standards are used globally. The toy industry adheres to ASTM F963. Visit ASTM.org for more information.

Consumer Guidance
The Toy Association’s consumer website offers parents and caregivers tips for safe and fun play through every stage of a child’s life. The website also includes a list of recently recalled products. Visit PlaySafe.org for more information.

Safety Education Program

The Toy Association’s Safety Education Program offers a clear overview of the key safety laws & regulations that impact the toy industry, covering state and federal requirements.

Whether you’re in quality assurance, product safety, regulatory affairs, or part of a legal or inventor/design team, this course is a great fit for anyone working to bring safe, compliant toys to market.

The course is offered at no cost to Toy Association members and is available to non-members for a fee of $495.

The Fight Against Counterfeits

The fight against counterfeit toys continues to be a top priority issue for The Toy Association.

We continue to work with federal officials to drive support of intellectual property protection bills, like the SHOP SAFE Act and INFORM Consumers Act.

The Toy Association also educates consumers at PlaySafe.org, on social media, and through ongoing media appearances on the dangers of counterfeit toys and how to avoid inadvertently purchasing them.

We are a member of the Buy Safe America Coalition, which represents a diverse group of responsible retailers, consumer groups, manufacturers, intellectual property advocates, and law enforcement officials who support efforts at all levels of government to protect consumers and communities from the sale of counterfeit and stolen goods.

Marketing to Children

The Toy Association is an advocate for sound and sensible measures protecting the privacy, safety, and special vulnerabilities of children in a complex media landscape.

Our goal is to promote industry compliance with guidelines and laws related to marketing to children and to empower families to make informed choices about the products they buy.

  • The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) is the children's arm of the advertising industry's self-regulation program. CARU evaluates child-directed advertising and promotional material across all media to advance truthfulness, accuracy, and consistency. Visit CARU.
  • The Federal Trade Commission’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) imposes certain requirements regarding the collection of personal information by operators of websites or online services directed to children under age 13, and by operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from children under age 13. Visit FTC.gov.
  • The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) is the nation’s largest membership organization for media literacy education. Since 1997, NAMLE has served as the leading voice, convener, and resource for media literacy education. NAMLE aims to make media literacy highly valued and widely practiced as an essential life skill. Protecting Workers
