The Genius of Play Launches “STEAM Playbook” on National STEAM Day
November 8, 2022 | From practicing math while shopping to creating structures with marshmallows and toothpicks, The Genius of Play’s new “STEAM Playbook” features fun activities that teach kids STEAM concepts through play.
The Genius of Play has partnered with the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), a non-profit organization committed to advancing gender equity and encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEM, to launch this new resource for parents and educators on National STEAM Day, November 8. The digital playbook includes eight play ideas that encourage kids to relate science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to the world around them and explore abstract concepts in a hands-on way.
“We know from our research that as many as 76 percent of parents would like their kids to end up in a STEM-related career or field, so we are excited to share a free resource that leverages the power of play to foster this kind of discovery and learning,” said Anna Yudina, senior director of marketing initiatives at The Toy Association. “All of the activities provided will give kids the opportunity to explore these subjects, and hopefully, may spark an interest to pursue a career in STEM.”
Each activity, including Coders and Robots, Technology Scavenger Hunt, and Tower Building, highlights the associated benefits of play and provides a list of simple household items families will need for setup. The playbook also includes eight ready-to-print coloring pages, word searches, and other activities that kids can complete on their own.
“Each play idea includes tips for making the activity simpler or more complex, so you can modify it depending on the child’s age, ensuring there’s something in our ‘STEAM Playbook’ for everyone,” Yudina continued.
The Genius of Play’s “STEAM Playbook” is available now online in a digital book format. For more information about The Genius of Play, visit thegeniusofplay.org.
