U.S. Ban on Goods from China’s Xinjiang Region Takes Effect June 21

May 27, 2022 | The Toy Association is reminding members that manufacture in China that a U.S. ban on all goods made in whole or in part from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) will take effect June 21. Companies are encouraged to verify their supply chains ahead of the deadline and prepare to validate that the goods were produced outside XUAR if challenged by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), which imposes the ban, was signed into law by President Biden in response to goods being mined, produced, or manufactured wholly or in part with forced labor from XUAR. The ban will remain in effect for eight years or until the U.S. certifies that China has ended its human rights abuses in the region.

The act will direct CBP to presume that all goods (including raw materials) imported from XUAR are made with forced labor. Imported goods from other countries that use materials that can be traced to XUAR or are associated with forced labor in China may also be detained.
