On July 14, a federal court granted a preliminary injunction in the pending lawsuit challenging California's SB 343, temporarily preventing the state from enforcing the law while litigation continues.

SB 343, also known as California's “truth in labeling” law, restricts the use of the chasing arrows recycling symbol on packaging unless specific criteria are met. The law was expected to create significant challenges for companies seeking to develop packaging that simultaneously complies with California requirements, other state laws, and international regulations.

The court's decision provides temporary relief by barring California from enforcing SB 343 until further order of the court. While the injunction does not resolve the underlying legal challenge, it pauses enforcement as the case moves forward.

Additional court proceedings are expected, and the California Legislature could also consider new legislation in 2027 to address issues raised by the lawsuit.
